Jonathan came to London to ferry his deadbeat father's corpse back home to California.
But the widow isn't giving him up as expected.
Now friendless in a foreign land, with only a few days to complete his mission, Jon must temporarily bunk with Philip, a bombastic young aristocrat. Despite appearing polar opposites, they find they're surprisingly good at causing trouble together, and commit rash and dastardly deeds aimed at repatriating Jon's father. As Jon nears his goal, though, he unwittingly unearths secrets about his father's life in England that add investigative complications to an already complicated body-snatching.
Throw in a mysterious priest, a 90s grunge band, and the curious collapse of Philip's family and social status, all to leave Jon wondering if there isn't another (nearly unthinkable) way for one bastard to find his way home.

Bastards edition by John Oakes Literature Fiction eBooks

I've read all the books from this author. They are vastly different in content and plot and loved every one of them.

In this book we follow Jonathan as he embarks on a missive that on its face seems like a simple task, distasteful to be sure but simple none the less.

The facts couldn't be further from the truth and Jonathan soon finds himself behind the eight ball before he even gets out of the airport.

After surviving the airport he soon realizes that his simple task has become an impossible task, but can he deny his grandmother who's sole wish is to have her son back? Not if he has any brains in his head.

Finding himself stranded in a foreign land Jonathan need to figure out what to do but first, he needs to find a place to stay and get food.

What happens is a journey that will stun you as we witness the wonders of the universe and how points of lights find each other through incalculable odds.

What starts out as a task almost worse than death to Jonathan will change his life and he'll find something he's been missing all his life in the most unlikely place and an unlikely time.

As typical with Mr. Oaks books there is a plot twisted with surprises and humor that keeps you turning page after page.

I recommend all his books and this is as good as any to start with.

Bastards edition by John Oakes Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Wasn't sure if I would like this book or not and still shaking my head, a bit different, but a little funny at times also. A boy goes to England to steal his father's dead corpse and bring it home to America to be buried.
This is a superior coming of age novel reminiscent of Salinger and Roth, who I think might have influenced Oakes. It is humorous to the point of slapstick and yet profound in it's characterization. Boys will be boys but you will love these guys if you have a certain sense of humor and love theater of the absurd. Strongly recommend this book.
For a terrific read that came full circle right to the end. It was a gonzo experience that had me laughing out loud. You wove a plot through a cast of whacked out weirdos ala Tim Dorsey, Hunter S. Thompson and Carl Hiassen. Kudos.
Superb read. Can't wait for more Jon Cross mixer scenes!! Had me laughing so hard it hurt. Supremely addictive literature.
Bastards is like the early Carl Hiassen novels - very funny, bittersweet, unpredictable, with a twisting and twisted plot. Towards the end a subplot about a Welsh priest adds a new dimension to the story, and is a lovely touch, as its tone is so different to the predominantly black humour. Well crafted and well written .
So well done I laughed through the whole book. Philip is especially inspired and hilarious. Not what I normally read, thank you for a book I will recommend.
John Oakes has the special talent, either natural or learned, of making absurd characters and situations seem compelling and real. Previous novels have included a dwarf illusionist and a vigilante Pope (Not in the same novel. That would be crazy.) Bastards goes in some similarly weird directions - and by that I specifically don't mean 'preciously weird' or romantically disturbing.

The main character of this novel is a basement dwelling, socially awkward young American man who arrives in Britain with a chip on his shoulder and no compelling life plan. By the end of the novel, he's a different person, not through some grand revelation, but by the gradual effect of his exposure to places, people, and situations that tilt him just far enough off his axis that his horizon has changed in a way that, much to his own surprise, permanently alters his view of what is possible. The path he takes on the way is by turn hilarious, morbid, embarrassing, frustrating, exciting, and surprising. The conclusion is emotionally satisfying but not saccharine.

The author champions the lovable loser without romanticizing him or mercilessly tearing him to shreds. Anyone who enjoyed his debut novel, The Right Kind of Stupid, will find much to love in Bastards.
