When Cara Hansen receives a psychic prediction during a bachelorette party entailing "a demonic presence approaching her near future," she is determined not to believe that such supernatural things exist. But when she is visited at work by a strange man with unearthly features it seems only Cara can perceive, she begins questioning everything…including her sanity. As a string of bad events occur, beginning with the disappearance of a co-worker, she begins to uncover secrets she was never meant to know, including a realm of demons and her unexpected affiliation with them…

The Devil In Her Heart The Devil In Her Heart Series Volume 1 Elle Charles 9780692289167 Books

Cara, a young bartender in an upscale tourist pub, has never felt like she fit in. She and her half-sister have the same mother, but different fathers, and she has never known her own, not even who he was. She has few friends and has never had a boyfriend. Her life takes a dramatic turn when she meets a beautiful young man who has strange, red eyes that only she can see; to others, his eyes look green. The reason she can see them stems from the genes she inherited from her father.

Romances with demons aren't usually my thing, but I couldn't put this book down. The author keeps the story fresh and exciting with plenty of unusual twists and turns. Along the way, she provides enough background info to make the story and characters interesting without delving so deeply and at such length that it pulls me out of the story.

The characters have a compelling complexity, a mix of positive and negative traits that makes them easy to believe.

My only disappointment is that the next novel in the series isn't available yet (this one isn't a cliffhanger, but left me wanting to know what happens next).

The Devil In Her Heart The Devil In Her Heart Series Volume 1 Elle Charles 9780692289167 Books Reviews

After reading the first.... I can't wait to buy the 2nd. She did a spectacular job at creating a magical environment that you feel part of as your turning the pages. Its a beautiful. Unique and haunting story that makes you forget your reading a story vs actually feeling like you're there and part of it!
Awesome
This was not a winner for me, for a number of reasons. To start with the author sets the whole thing up as not adhering to Christian doctrine—characters stress that the evil beings are 'Shadows' not 'Demons,' for example—but then the book repeatedly falls back into Biblical and Christian mythology. (Look at the title, even.) There are demons, angels, a Garden of Eden, a fall, prayers to God are answered, crosses hold power to save, etc. It felt very much like Charles just couldn't help it, or maybe (worse) didn't even notice. (Speaking of the title, unless it is further explained in future books, it makes no sense for the circumstance of the book.)

The book dragged on and on, spending lots of time on trivialities like going to work or dinner with family or dating or four thousand 'woe is me' complaints about not being the pretty one. Then it rushes through scenes relating to the actual plot, often even falling back on cop outs like 'that week passed without incident' and large chunks of unaccounted for time being swept away.

Despite involving demons and such the whole thing felt very flat. Mostly because no one seemed to really ever react to anything. For example, the declaration that Cara is half 'shadow' is made as the last sentence in a chapter, with no build-up and is not addressed in the following chapter. So any emotional impact it might have is missed. It might as well have been a statement about it being warm this August. Or the time she woke up on a different plain of existence (maybe even in hell), having just lost her virginity to a demon (now a Demon, not a shadow, BTW) and is being hunted by the demon queen and her horde of followers, you would think she might be a little freaked out. Nope, she's concerned about missing her shift at work and heads off for breakfast. WTF? Really?

This was pretty much the norm for the book. It doesn't allow tension to build. As another example, at one point Cara is in the middle of a fight to the death, then, while being strangled, she suddenly wakes up in a car and it's over. (Which is really jarring, BTW.) It's not until pages and pages and pages later that we get a second hand, paired down account of what happened. That scene (and plenty like it) could have been really powerful; instead, it just fizzles to flat. It felt like the author didn't know how to conclude the fight, so she just skipped it.

There are also a lot of things that aren't really well integrated into the plot. For example, Liz is presented as a work colleague, maybe-friend. She and Cara had never even hung out outside of work. So, Cara's determination to save her, as if she's the most important person to her, doesn't make sense. Also, Caymn is oddly sweet, but there is no explanation for the fact that he is such a good 'person' when every other demon is evil. He is still a demon of greed, so why doesn't he act like one?

The book is basically about the dreaded girl who discovers sudden powers and then, with no real training, manages to fight and defeat a 10,000-year-old, extremely powerful, experienced, skilled enemy, with no real explanation of how. It was ineffective, to say the least.

I could not relate to any of the characters. I did not feel any tension in the plotting. The 'romance' was insta-lust and never felt solid. But though the writing is really flat and not particularly engaging, it is structurally sound (minus some editing issues). There may be others who like this a lot more than me, but I'm calling it a fail.
Great read!
The story is fast-paced and we'll written with just the right amount of romance. I really couldn't put it down. Edgar die the next book in the series )
Wanted to like this book, but couldn't. Didn't even finish it.
First, let me clarify that I do not know the author. I was not given a free copy of the book to read and review. This book was, however, recommended by an acquaintance of the author.

Second, while I did like the concept and basic ideas of the book, it only received two stars from me due to technical issues in plot and grammar. A professional editor does not appear to have been used and would have done much to improve both story and grammar.

The premise of the book seems to be a love story wound into the discovery by a young woman that she is half human and half demon and what comes of this discovery. I haven't seen this concept before, so think it has potential to be a great series if this first book undergoes some serious editing and a second edition is issued.

The first third of the book drags a bit and I had a hard time pushing myself to keep reading. Beyond that point, while it wasn't a case of "I couldn't put it down" it wasn't a case of "I think my brain is bleeding." I had no problem with the (anti?)heroine being a bit whiny and angst-ridden; we do all get that way at times. It was her flip-flop on both the supernatural and personal relationships that was hard for me to take.

Cara's conviction that the seer is a fraud, then, maybe not, followed by complete faith in the seer's assistant. Completely jarring. Cara's pointed statement that she wasn't raised to be religious, but she constantly falls back on prayer every time things get a little iffy. Add that to the big emphasis in the beginning that demons don't exist, they're SHADOWS, but then you suddenly never hear the word shadow again, while DEMON is just about every other word running through her mind and then spilling out her mouth. I'm also unsure why the world devil was used in the title as opposed to the word demon.

Her obvious dislike of her coworker that suddenly turns into a girls night out/slumber party. Also jarring. Only to be followed by the belief that coworker-now-friend has been kidnapped by a demon, but not even going to the trouble of filing a missing persons report.

Cara's magical/mystical training under the guidance of the seer's assistant and the assistant's mother is deemed imperative, but then drags out (mostly left to the reader's imagination) over the course of weeks, with no discussion or strategizing about how this training will aid in the rescue of Liz, the kidnapped friend. I would have expected a crash course in the basics so she didn't kill herself by accident followed by some serious practicing of THE BIG SPELL.

I think I've made my point, so I won't go into more detail of plot issues.

The grammar issues I had with the book were more structural than anything. I noticed only a very few spelling errors. There were several cases of missing words and some misused words. All that can be easy to overlook/forgive in the grand scheme. The biggest faults for me were overuse of exclamation points, poorly formed sentences and overly long paragraphs. I spent quite a lot of time rewriting sentences in my head and mentally hitting the return key after reading a sentence that should have been the preview to where the coming paragraph was going to take me.

I would strongly suggest serious revision and reissue. Also, new cover art, as the current image is a bit off putting. If I had just stumbled across this book instead of having been looking for it, the cover art probably would have prevented me from checking it out.
